MBBS in China: Hear an Indonesian Student’s Experience at Tianjin Medical University

Lukas first year MBBS student

For many Indonesian students considering a medical degree overseas, countries such as Australia, the United Kingdom, and Malaysia are often among the first destinations that come to mind. Yet in recent years, MBBS in China has increasingly become part of the conversation.

With internationally recognized universities, growing scholarship opportunities, modern medical facilities, and a diverse international student community, more students are exploring medical education in China. One of them is Lukas Stephen, a first-year MBBS student at Tianjin Medical University (TMU).

Having lived in China, Indonesia, and the United States, Lukas was already familiar with different cultures and educational environments. When it came time to choose where to study medicine, he ultimately chose Tianjin Medical University, one of China’s leading medical institutions. Today, he is experiencing firsthand what it is like to study medicine, adapt to a new environment, and build an international network in one of China’s largest cities.

Study MBBS in China

Located in Tianjin, approximately 1.5 hours from Beijing, Tianjin Medical University attracts students from around the world. The university hosts more than 1,300 international students from over 90 countries, creating a multicultural environment both inside and outside the classroom.

For Lukas, one of the most rewarding aspects of studying in China has been meeting people from different backgrounds. Medical education is demanding anywhere in the world, but studying alongside classmates from Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Middle East provides an additional learning experience beyond textbooks and lectures. “It gives you a broader perspective,” Lukas explained during a recent student sharing session. “You learn not only from professors, but also from fellow students who come from different healthcare systems and cultures.

What Does the MBBS Program Look Like?

The MBBS program at Tianjin Medical University typically spans six years and combines classroom learning with practical clinical training. Students begin with pre-clinical subjects such as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and pathology before progressing to hospital-based clinical rotations and internship training.

Tianjin Medical University’s clinical training network includes seven university hospitals, along with affiliated and teaching hospitals that provide students with hands-on experience in healthcare settings. For students considering medicine abroad, this exposure to real clinical environments is often one of the most important factors when evaluating a university.

Beyond Lectures and Laboratories

While academics form the core of medical school, university life extends beyond lecture halls and exams. Lukas had to adjust to a new daily routine, different food, and a different cultural environment. Living in university accommodation, exploring the city, participating in student activities, and connecting with fellow Indonesian students have all become part of his experience.

There are definitely challenges,” he admitted. One of the biggest adjustments for many international students is language. Although the MBBS program is delivered in English, learning basic Mandarin can make everyday life significantly easier, from ordering food to navigating transportation and interacting with local communities. For Lukas, adapting to life in China has been a gradual process of learning, observing, and stepping outside his comfort zone.

The Reality of Studying Medicine in China

Many students imagine studying medicine overseas as an exciting adventure, but Lukas emphasizes that medicine remains one of the most demanding academic pathways regardless of the country. Managing coursework, preparing for examinations, and balancing personal responsibilities require discipline and consistency.

At the same time, he believes the challenges are part of the growth process. Medical school not only develops scientific knowledge but also teaches resilience, independence, and time management, skills that will remain valuable long after graduation.

Is China the Right Choice for MBBS?

China is becoming an increasingly attractive destination for students interested in medicine, particularly those looking for internationally focused learning environments and relatively affordable tuition compared to some traditional study destinations.

At Tianjin Medical University, annual tuition for the MBBS program is approximately RMB 48,000, while accommodation and living costs vary depending on lifestyle and personal preferences. Scholarship opportunities are also available for eligible students.

However, Lukas believes that choosing a university should never be based solely on cost or rankings. Students should carefully research program structures, accreditation, licensing pathways, career goals, and the type of learning environment that best suits their needs.

As more Indonesian students explore opportunities beyond traditional study destinations, China is becoming an option worth considering. For Lukas, the decision to study medicine in China has provided not only an academic pathway but also an opportunity to develop a global perspective and build friendships across cultures.
